South Asian womxn rule!
Meet Priya Fox.
She has always had a passion for acting since she was a child but when she attended dramas schools, she felt incredibly alone because no one looked like her. Her journey, in her own words:
At the beginning of 2021, I saw a couple of tweets from fellow South Asian creatives, who were sharing their negative experiences about being type-cast and the fact that we are so under-represented.
I sent a tweet out to see if my fellow South Asians would like to get together over Zoom. I was completely overwhelmed with the response. I had messages from South Asians and Indo-Caribbean creatives from around the world.
I’ve had 6 meetings via Zoom connecting up South Asian creatives sessions (with the help of Aarti Shah who manages South Asian Artists). The success of these sessions is because people feel like their voices are being heard, that they can speak in a safe place and talk about the lack of representation.
It has brought many South Asian creatives together and people have started to collaborate with one another. We need to encourage one another and be there to support our community. We want to tell the world that we are talented, so stop giving us limited roles, and give us leading roles.
My vision is to be at the Oscars, Emmys and BAFTAs and just see people who look like me everywhere, winning awards, sitting at tables celebrating and congratulating one another.
By coming together, we know that we are not alone, and that we are creating a powerful movement together.
Great work connecting the South Asian creative community, Priya!
